Ombre Aplomb

Residential Design by Mu-Chin Chiang

Duality and Aesthetics in a Livable Space

Ombre Aplomb, a residential project designed by Mu-Chin Chiang, embraces the concept of duality, blending Chinese philosophical undertones with contemporary art forms. This 160-square-meter apartment showcases a unique combination of Eastern and Western influences, creating a space that is both visually appealing and functional.

The design of Ombre Aplomb revolves around the contrast between light and dark, creating a distinct dual-color scheme throughout the space. Matte wall tiling and gray mirror paneling in black and white hues complement the natural appearance of bianco carrara and nero marquina marbles. The flooring features a mix of wood parquet and polished marbles, defining the dining section and separating it from the open shared space.

One of the challenges faced during the design process was accommodating Eastern culinary methods while maintaining the overall aesthetic. To address this, the kitchen was individually segmented in a separate room, allowing for the relocation of the gas pipeline. This decision not only met the client's requirements but also ensured a seamless integration of the kitchen into the overall design.

The private spaces in Ombre Aplomb are characterized by deeper backdrops, creating a sense of intimacy and privacy. In contrast, the shared areas are filled with natural light and feature a clean and elegant arrangement. The antique mirror paneling behind the hearth, paired with white marbles, not only enhances the visual spaciousness but also provides additional room for audio devices.

Completed in February 2021, Ombre Aplomb is located in Taoyuan City, Taiwan. The design not only prioritizes materiality and color formation but also focuses on functional utility and agile movement. The result is a durable and pragmatic living space that seamlessly combines aesthetics and functionality.

Ombre Aplomb was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2022 in the category of Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design. This prestigious award recognizes designs that are well-designed, practical, and innovative, meeting professional and industrial requirements. Ombre Aplomb stands out for its integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics, contributing to a better world.
